LA Complex Season Two Premiere: Gay Couple Tariq & Kal Breaks Up Because Of Domestic Violence!!

I am conflicted about the LA Complex’s gay storyline between because a part of me loves the fact it focuses on a black gay male couple. I enjoy the chemistry between Benjamin Watson and Andra Fuller. Watson and Fuller are committed to their roles that I believe there is passion between their characters Tariq and Kal. It is rare to see young, masculine, black gay men on mainstream television.

However, I am disgusted at the stereotypes of black masculinity and sexuality. First, the character Kal is a down low rapper, he’s an ex con, and he’s a violent thug.

Kal is abusive towards Tariq  he treats him like dirt and he brutally beats Tariq it is simply too abhorrent to watch!

Black men we are already stigmatized  by a hostile and racist white society through essentialism. It is easy for racists to believe that black men are violent and dangerous.

I guess it was just impossible for the LA Complex writers to create a story about a loving and positive black gay relationship?

There is  a paucity of representation of black gay men on television, yet LA Complex has to present a negative image of black gay men.

It just seems like the LA Complex writers have ticked off all the racist and negative stereotypes about gay black men. Isn’t there another way to explore a black gay male relationship without violence? Couldn’t the writers have found another way to make conflict and compelling storylines for Tariq and Kal?

There are many black gay men we are confident and proud about our homsoexuality. I am aware there are closeted black gay men who struggle with being gay and black.

Was it necessary for the LA Complex writers to have Kal beat up his boyfriend Tariq? I am cognizant there are closeted down low black men out there. However, would a white gay male couple be treated the same way? I can’t recall ever seeing a white gay male couple on television involved in such a dysfunctional and violent relationship on television.

I think the LA Complex missed an opportunity to create a positive and loving gay black male relationship by focusing simply using violence to entertain the audience.

Not in the US, but over in England, there’s a daily soap called, Hollyoaks and it features two white male gay characters and the majority of their storyline is based on domestic violence between them for almost 2 years. That storyline is still going strong.

Now, I’m glad that Tariq was able to get support from Dynasty, the music producer. What bothers me the most, is that it seems like the show’s going to focus on the fallout on Kaldrick’s attempted suicide due to him beating up Tariq, while we’ve got to wait a couple of episodes to see the journey that Tariq’s going to be on, while back in Montreal.

Does the show really think that the audience is interested in watching a storyline about a talented child actor and his older sister, trying to survive being homeless making the journey to LA over the fallout of an existing character?

I agree I think it is bad writing the plot about the child actor and his older sister journey to Hollywood. I really want to see how Tariq deals with the pain that his lover physically abused him. I also was pleased to see Dynasty so supportive of Tariq. I think Dynasty knows Kal is gay.

He knows and the proof was the video clip. Kal was the one that made the move to kiss Tariq in the studio, because they thought they were alone. Tariq would have never done anything like that, due to it being the workplace. Kal was in a true moment of expressing his true feelings to him at that moment. Then Dynasty and Kal’s hanger on came in and hell broke lose. I know that the show wants me to find sympathy in Kal’s situation, but his INITIALLY reaction is violence. He didn’t have to go to that extreme of beating Tariq like that in front of everyone. He even attempt to “step up” to Dynasty and he HAD proof of what went on in the studio. I hope that in this period of exploring Kal’s issues, they have him seeing a therapist, because he can’t change on his own OR somehow living at The Lux in Tariq’s room.

I don’t feel sorry for Kal and I didn’t feel sorry for Kal when he attempted suicide. I really feel bad for Tariq when he was crying on the phone calling his friend Abby. I think it is sad that Tariq’s journey isn’t going to be explored in depth. Why should the audience care about Kal he’s a jerk and a creep? Kal lost his boyfriend the only person in his life who was trying to understand him. Tariq is too good for Kal and I can’t see Kal and Tariq getting back together unless Kal goes through a transformation. I just hope Tariq’s scars are not permanent.
